How to Hide Depression at School

Depression at school occurs by many causes at school but the main cause is because the student can not get along in school due to the following reasons: –

  • They get low grades
  • Some of their peers bully them
  • Some of their teachers do not like them
  • They are afraid of exams

The main source of depression for a student or for any person is from the inside as most students think that there should be something changed in their surroundings, ie: their peers or teacher or parents, and from the inside means that their own thoughts, feelings and emotions that turns into actions are the source of their depression not anything from their surroundings.

Depression feeling is accompanied by some other feelings like: –

  • Feeling lonely
  • Feeling unacceptable
  • Feeling less adaptable
  • Feeling superior
  • Refusing to accept standards short of perfection

These feelings can be the cause of depression or vice versa, ie: depression can be the source of these feelings, I'll discuss depression using a story of someone has depression “Dipsy” and someone who has no depression “Hipsy”.

Dipsy has deep fears to do many things in his life but he likes to challenge himself, he has fears when he listened to someone who is abusing someone else, he thinks “What if this person came to talk to me like this?”, He starts coming up with solutions for this assumption.

On the other hand, Hipsy's main focus is on his goals, he has a big vision for his life and he cares about building healthy relationships with others, he focus to talk in a polite way and he does not let anyone to exceed the limits with him when he feels bad towards someone who is communicating with him.

Dipsy thinks he is open minded and can accept any invitation from anyone to do anything, he has no boundaries to know anyone and he thinks he is totally right, he thinks “Why should I stop someone from knowing me ?, I like to know people “he does not notice when someone makes him dreams bad, he just ignores his feelings and continues the conversation anyways, he believes by doing so he is building a better relationship than anyone.

By looking on both students from a wider angle, Hipsy has better relationships than Dipsy, he is reaching his goals and many students consider him a good personality to know, Dipsy on the other hand has feelings at the end of each day of loneliness and he returns to his home to find that he could not talk about what he feels to his siblings or parents, he does not know he is depressed.

Hipsy returns home with a higher energy, he has his lunch and then prepare to go for a fitness class, he believes that having a healthy body can make him more successful, at the end of the school year he gets a higher grades than Dipsy.

Dipsy try to study hard but at the end of the school year he gets lower grades than Hipsy. Hipsy and Dipsy are not friends although they are in the same class.

Dipsy respect Hipsy and he is jealous about his strong personality, Hipsy have no problems to know Dipsy but the problem is that Dipsy fears approaching him because he did before and find no problems to do so.

Dipsy believes in being challenged that's why he is more attached to relationships that he thinks challenging for him, he can accept bad treatment from anyone moreover he is more attached to students who treat him in a bad way!

After reading this story from a wider angle, I will explain what should Dipsy do to have a better school life, Dipsy should: –

  • Not accept bad treatment from anyone by triggering how he feels when someone talks to him, when he feels bad as a reaction from a bad treatment, he should ask the one talking to him politely that he does not accept such treatment by saying “Please talk to me in a different way because I do not accept this treatment “, by doing so for several months he started feeling better about himself which made his depression levels decreases in him.
  • Dipsy should not be attached to students who make him feels bad, he should trigger when a student make him feels bad and avoid him. He should be attached to students who make him fees quite normal and who add value for his relationship with them.
  • Dipsy should not treat anyone badly, ie: he should not make anyone dreams bad by always trying to treat other students in a good manner.
  • Dipsy should get closer to students who does not exploit him, he should talk to other students who respect him.
  • Dipsy should focus on his life by planning his school year and dividing his plan into goals and writing them in a piece of paper.

By doing so, Dipsy becomes much better in a period of 6 month, he should consider that everything can not be changed overnight.

Now Dipsy has the freedom to know anyone and has no constrains to hide his depression as he used to do before because he became stronger and happier.

Depression and Online Therapy Sessions

The internet has revolutionized the processes across the sectors, making things easier and faster. The delivery of services is no exception. Now people prefer even consulting a doctor online and seek his advice in case of a health problem. Consultancy apart, should a patient also go for online therapy sessions?

Why bother yourself by pushing to a therapist's clinic which may further give you anxiety attacks? Reaching out a therapist is much easier online. There is evidence that online therapies have helped patients in treating many diseases. As part of the study, the researchers selected 62 patients suffering from depression for receiving CBT over an eight-week trial period. Exactly half of the participants were given a face-to-face therapy along with less number of assignments as compared to online assisted therapy. The latter participants received a regular feedback from a therapist without any video assisted interaction.

The study income showed not much differences between the two groups. For face-to-face therapy patients 50 percent were not diagnosed with depression anymore as compared to 53 percent among the online patients. Even after three months, the condition of the depressed patients treated online continued to improve. On the contrary, patients with face-to-face therapy worsened after discontinuing the treatment sessions.

How can online CBT benefit

Dr. David Gratzer, attaching psychiatrist, and Faiza Khalid-Khan, social worker and director of Mental Health, The Scarborough Hospital, Toronto strongly believe in internet assisted treatment. Dr. Gratzer says, “In the age of Google, this psychological intervention is empowering, clinically efficient and consistent with the way that, increasingly, patients interact with health care.”

“There is as much evidence for cognitive behavioral therapy as there is for medications to treat mild and moderate depression, as well as evidence that they have a synergistic effect,” says Dr. Gratzer. “In other words, for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians struggling with depression, Internet-assisted cognitive behavior therapy offers a cost-effective and empowering way of access an important treatment.”

For patients who are shy and fear the stigma of suffering from mental illness, internet based therapy is a boon. Such patients may be comfortable in speaking to a virtual therapist than an in person therapist. Moreover, the online therapy saves a lot of time and ensures patients' convenience.

However, the trials do not recommend the online therapy for the patients suffering from severe depression. The researchers believe that the internet delivered cognitive behavioral therapy can contribute greatly in patient empowerment and increased clinical efficiency.

The study also showed shortcomings like low adherence by patients and lack of home access to internet. Some were unable to have an interpersonal touch and then lacked in creating conversations that may have encouraged the patients to participate.

Because internet-delivered CBT has shown long-term benefits and high success ratio to patients suffering from depression, experimenting it online can be effective.

Society’s Lifestyle and the Development of Depression

In this era We live, the very style and personality that society has developed are the reasons why the rate of mental issues such as anxiety and depression is high and not rarely knocks down those who experience them. There's many variations that contribute to someone developing depression, an issue considered to be the illness of the new world. One of the variations is the concept that working on what can be seen and heard is enough to make a change.

Negativity and anxiety hold hands together, where one is, be sure that the other is there too even if it's not so obvious at first. Anxiety is a very complex issue that not only involves the mind with all the emotions but also the body and it's hormones but the primary reason for it to exist is found in the mind and then is transferred and expressed in the body.

Anxiety makes you unable to live without excessive worry aboutcoming days and events and that's where negativity fits into, suddenless your mouth may only say positive things and prophesy success, if there is anxiety, it means there is a contradiction between what you say and what you feel, the words that come out of the mouth have power but more power has what is contained in the silence of the inside.

As the primary cause for anxiety is in the mind, the words that the body may speak can never be louder than the ones within. “Cut evil from its roots”, this is an old saying but looks like We have forgotten about it or forgotten how to do it.

Instead of working on the source of problems, we began working on the symptoms, just like medications do, they may help the body but only treat the symptoms, not the illnesses, it's our own body that does that job and so it is the same with mental / emotional issues, We work on what we say and what our actions look like, which are the symptoms, but the source is contained inside and it can be silent, just like an illness and it's our job to fight against it, just like our bodies fight against microorganisms everyday, to keep us healthy.

Depression is a much more complex issue and comes from a baggage of issues which often includes anxiety plus negativity. Some people get lost within themselves, trying to understand why life has brought so much to them, so much that hurt, so much that took good things away. This stage of trying to understand brings gloom and grief to the heart and they can make the stage last for as long as they live within and during this process, the person gets weaker and becomes a pessimist, to the point that even when they hear good and encouraging messages, they might find reasons within, not to believe that they are capable of something or that their life will get better or that they can be happy.

It is impossible to determine the exact reasons for depression, as each person is unique and goes through unique situations but gloom and grief because of disappointment, loneliness or even a family member's death, seem to be associated with the beginning of the development of depression.

The elements that compose depression can be very silent in the beginning, easily avoided and ignored, but while the body may not show any signs of depression, deep inside, each person knows something is not right. the biggest mistake is to ignore and avoid the very well feelings that you wish you would never have.

To live in denial is to give power to those silent depression fruits, which with time will grow to take control of your energy, strength, well-being and positivity.

In order to make an effective change, you need to work on the source of problems, think about depression as being a tree that gives poisonous fruits, and as each fruit starts to appear and grow, you go and take them out from the tree. Soon new fruits will start growing because you may have taken away what the tree produces, for awhile, but did not take away its power to produce its fruits so they will keep coming, that's how depression works, especially when the surrounding provides unsuitable and uncomfortable situations.

So an efficient change is the one made inside because only that way, good fruits can start being produced and the poisonous fruits from depression can finally fade away.

Brain Scan May Indicate Depression Risk: Study

Depression is a common but serious illness most likely caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental and psychological factors. Anyone can have the blues occasionally, but when depression comes in the way of a normal life one may need an expert advice. With the majority of people getting better with the treatment – accounting medications, psychotherapies and other methods – it is not difficult for those with depressive disorder to lead a normal life.

A study published in the Neuropsychopharmacology in 2015 brought out a breakthrough discovery. It revealed the precursor, or biomarker, that could indicate the risk of developing depression in adults and children. By studying individuals at high familial risk for major depressive disorder (MDD), the researchers aim to identify potential biomarkers associated with the risk of developing MDD, which may help in prevention and early intervention of depression in adults and children.

Study finds

According to the researchers at the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), a network of interacting brain regions known as the default mode network (DMN) is likely to have strong connections with a high risk of depression. In the study, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to compare the brain connections of people at high risk for depression to those at low risk. They used MRI scans to index the brains of 111 people aged 11-60 with high and low familial risk for depression, suggesting that a greater number of connections in the DMN increased the risk for major depression.

According to the scientists, the DMN brain system is significantly active in people who are particularly involved in internal thinking, such as ruminative thoughts. Additionally, increased DMN connections that have been observed in individuals with MDD can be treated with antidepressant. As the study indicates that the process of increasing DMN connections may occur before the onset of depression, it may allow researchers to look for brain changes that are not a result of depression since the disorder has not yet manifested in most of the individuals.

“These findings suggest that looking at activity in the DMN may offer an objective method of identifying people who are at risk of developing major depression,” said lead author Myrna Weissman, Ph.D., the Diane Goldman Kemper Family Professor of epidemiology (in psychiatry) at CUMC and chief of the division of epidemiology at NYSPI. “This may represent another way towards advocacy prevention and early intervention for this major public health issue.”

The researchers claimed that the study will make it easier to identify depression before its sunset in patients and may also help find more effective treatment for the condition. “If this insight proves correct,” said Jonathan Posner, MD, lead author and associate professor of clinical psychiatry at CUMC, “behavioral interventions that improve the functioning of the DMN, such as meditation and mindfulness, could be used to address a brain- based problem (increased DMN connections), before it leads to a depressive illness, “he added.

Path to recovery

While the depressive disorders are still being studied, thankfully there are ways to deal with them so one can continue to live a regular life. Hay Fever Sufferers Four Times More Likely to Develop Mental Illness: Study

Sneezing, watery eyes and blocked nose are some common symptoms of hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, which affects up to one in five people at some point in his or her life. Those who suffer from allergy and experience symptoms such as sneezing, sniffling and red, itchy eyes may be alarmed to know that a new study has found a relationship between hay fever and depression. Other large-scale population studies have also shown an association between seasonal allergic and clinical depression.

The study, published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research in 2015, analyzed data of 10,000 teenagers with hay fever and 30,000 without it. Both the groups were observed for near a decade to find out how many went on to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder – a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and the ability to carry out day-to-day activities. The findings of the study at the National Yang-Ming University of Taiwan showed that teens who suffered from hay fever were four times more likely to develop bipolar disorder as adults.

Runny nose and mental illness

Symptoms of hay fever are not particularly uncomfortable – it can interfere with sleep, leading to poor concentration, depression, anxiety and mood disorders. This is actually the body's response to attack pollen, mold or whatever else someone is allergic to, in a bid to get rid of foreign “invaders.”

Various animal and human studies have revealed that cytokines can affect brain function by decreasing the level of brain's serotonin, the happiness chemical, the deficiency of which causes depression. Although these symptoms may subside once the threat disappears and the inflamed tissue heals, serious problems arise when the inflammation does not go away. Scientists also believe that psychological and emotional problems could actually be the result of long-term inflammation and stress. This explains why allergy-induced inflammation leads to psychiatric illness.

Since allergic individuals are at a higher risk for developing various types of anxiety and / or mood syndromes, researchers are looking at the potential wherever anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, could treat depression.

Previous studies had found the blood of depressed patients to contain inflammatory markers; this however, does not prove that infection is also present in the brain – thought to be responsible for the sunset of depressive symptoms.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – AKA The Winter Blues

It's the middle of February in Michigan. Snow is on the ground, trees are without leaves, and the birds have not yet returned home. The children are not playing outside, nobody is barbecuing, the parks are empty, and most of us are spending our free time hibernating and patiently waiting for brighter days. During these months, the number of people experiencing symptoms of depression increases drastically.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known and minimized as just the “Winter Blues,” is a type of depression that is linked to the change in seasons. For most people who struggle with SAD, it begins with the change to the fall season and continues through the winter months. Those who struggle with SAD may experience a lack of energy, sadness, moodiness, feelings of hopelessness, sleep and appetite changes, etc. It is real, yet often minimized.

SAD is real, and it does affect many people, yet it can be treated. Some people benefit from phototherapy (light therapy), psychotherapy, and / or medicines. If you or someone you love seems to be on a downer that can not be kicked, consider the possibility of SAD.

What can you do? Most people can help themselves improve their moods by increasing the amount of time spent outdoors. Is it cold? Well, yes. Of course it is – it's winter! However, bundle up with a hat, scarf, warm coat, gloves or mittens and winter boots to vent outside for at least an hour daily. Even in the winter months, being outdoors can help improve your mood and brighten your spirit drastically.

In addition to walking outside, look around your office or work space and your home. Can you arrange your furniture or seating to let in more natural sunlight? During the day, open all the curtains and let the sun shine through! Those light blocking curtains are great when watching a movie or sleeping, but not so great during the day when you're struggling with SAD. Let the light in!

If the natural sun does not seem to help, professional help may be necessary. You can contact your primary care physician for an antidepressant or contact a therapist for psychotherapy, or you can do both. There is no reason to go through this alone, reach out! Get some help from someone who cares.

Meaning of Depression

A very common habit among youngsters is to use the line, “I am depressed!”, When they are simply sad or upset. People do not realize the strength of the word depression and tend to use it as a substitute to sadness.

Most often we think that depression is just a case of extreme sadness. When we are faced with a tragedy, we feel depressed. But after a while it goes away. That's what the general belief is. But depression is far more than a mere bout of sadness. It is something with the potential to cause extreme harm and ruin lives, if not treated appropriately.

Keeping the magnitude in mind, let me throw some light on what exactly depression entails.

What is depression and why is it caused?

• Depression is a state of being where a person tends to feel absolutely empty, anxious and lost. It is the lowest point on the emotional scale and is marked by a variety of negative feelings like, guilt, helplessness, anger, irritability, etc.

• Depression is much more than an extreme mood swing. It is a behavioral disorder, which like any disorder needs treatment. No matter how happy a person may be, if there is depression, it needs to be treated.

• Depression is not to be confused with sadness. Sadness is an emotion. No doubt it is painful and negative, but it is now as serious as depression.

• Depression can be caused due to a variety of reasons. Some of the most common ones include traumatic events from ones childhood, sexual abuse, family pressures, etc. Loss of a dear one can also be a reason.

• Some other reasons could include life changing events, such as childbirth, menopause, any medical diagnosis, etc.

• Among adolescents, the highest number of depression cases are due to societal rejection, bullying, peer pressure etc.

• Certain medicines, like medication for Hepatitis C, sleep medication, high blood pressure medication, etc. are also known to cause depression. Such cases are known as medically induced depression.

• Another major cause for depression is substance abuse, narcotics, etc.

Types of depression

1. Major Depression

This is the most commonly known type of depression. It is also referred to as Major Depressive Disorder. It can be caused due to any major event or even a series of smaller events or problems. A person is diagnosed with major depression if he / she displays symptoms of depression (given below types) for over two weeks.

2. Persistent Depressive Disorder

If a person has undergone depression for over a period of 2 years, it is called persistent depressive disorder. Although the cause of depression may be same as major depression, for some reason the person may be incapable of overcoming it. Previously PDD was known as dysthymia.

3. Manic Depression

Manic depression is more commonly known as Bipolar Disorder. In the case of bipolar disorder, a person experiences extreme mood swings, ranging from unbelievable highs to depressed lows. The person can not control his behavior and may take drastic steps.

Manic depression is one of the most serious forms of depression.

4. Seasonal Affective Disorder

It is a form of depression which is seasonal in nature, mostly happens during the winters. People who have seasonal depression, find it difficult to cope in the lack of bright sunlight. Here during winter, their depression peaks.

5. Psychotic Depression

People suffering from psychotic depression, have symptoms similar to depression along with psychotic symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, etc.

6. Post-Partum Depression

This is the form of depression that women experience in the period immediately after childbirth. This could happen because of the obviously overwhelming experience, excess attention to the new born, etc.

The above given types are the 6 most common types of depression diagnosed among people. While the impact and the treatment for these forms of depression may differ, the symptoms are similar for most of them. Listed below are the most common symptoms.

Symptoms of Depression:

• Lack of appetite or excess of appetite.
• Lack of interest in activities you once loved doing.
• Sudden weight loss or weight gain
• Sleeplessness (insomnia) or excessive sleep
• Fatigue
• Reckless behavior
• Thoughts of death, suicide, etc.
• Self-hate or self-loathing
• Unexplained guilt and anger
• Crying for no reason, getting upset easily

From the above listed symptoms, if any 5, including lack of interest and thoughts of death, persist over a week, it is advisable to visit a general physician and then a proper counselor or psychiatrist.

Self-medication must be avoided at all costs and if the doctor prescribes any medication, it should never be stopped, unless the doctor himself explains says so.

Don’t Let Depression Drag You Down

So the other day I was going through Tumblr and I saw another interesting post about depression. I know, I know, there are many posts about depression on Tumblr, and you also probably know that I wrote an earlier article about depression because of one of those posts. But just bear with me here, this post that I saw was no ordinary post.

That post brave a wonderfully written solution on how to tackle the whole depression thing. And the answer, even though it might seem quite simple, actually makes a lot of sense.

It's basically, to have a goal.

Depression is when you do not feel like doing anything because you just do not see the point. But having a goal is the exact opposite as that. Having a goal, one that means the world to you, that makes your heart smile every time you think about it, can change everything. You'll commit your life and soul into it and do anything to achieve it.

You probably think I sound kinda idealistic. But I've been there before. It sounded idealistic to me too, when I was on the other side, but it works. I used to not see the point in things, because I was not depressed, I was more confused to as because I was doing the things I was doing. But that changes when you have a goal.

For me, when I set my goals, and worked towards achieving them, it was like a fire had awakened in my chest, a fire that greater more and more until the need to achieve my goal became of paramount importance. If that truly is the goal for you, it will drive you crazy with passion to just think about it.

But how do you decide what goal is for you? You listen to your Heart. No, not your Emotions or Your Mind, your all-knowing Spiritual Heart which connects you to them whole universe.

Your Heart, even though it might not be similar to you, knows what you want. It will tell you what your goal is. It's usually a talent, hobby or something you're just doing in your free time. But most of the time, the thought of that being your goal would already kick start the passion within you to get started on it because you love it so much.

Having a goal gives you a purpose, a reason to stand and fight. It consumes you until not only you want but you need, to achieve it. And when you begin doubting your goal, remember that you're doing it for you, because it makes you happy and your Heart says so. Your goal is something you love.

So listen to your heart, discover what you want. Set a goal and stick to it. And most importantly, enjoy the journey of getting there. Remember, there is a purpose for you being here. Do not let depression drag you down.

Most of the time we are not really conscious. We act like irrational animals, led by instincts and emotions.

Since we have an absurd and evil nature, we make strange mistakes that work against us. We do not understand why we do things that are unsafe and we should avoid, or why we say words that do not reflect our real opinion.

Konrad Lorenz's work provided that we do not make rational decisions the way we believe. Most of our decisions result from inherited behavioral programs that predetermine our reactions. Even though Lorenz is a Nobel laureate, his work did not become as known as it should because his discoveries were unsuccessful for the human race.

The real reasons why your heart is so heavy can be found only when you will analyze the meaning of your dreams according to the scientific method of dream interpretation. You have to understand in which ways your anti-conscience caused problems in your personality and in your life.

On the other hand, you are in a crazy world without justice. Everyone should be depressed for living in such a world, but most people are indignant to terror if it does not affect them directly. They are also misled by the false impression that they can live in a private paradise and have many material pleasures, surrounded being surrounded by violence, immorality, and poverty.

Human beings are absurd and evil. This is why you see so many people trying to be happy in a cruel and dangerous world, without trying to correct it and change it.

You must not envy their wonderful happiness or desire to imitate their example. Your life and your mind must be different.

You have to understand the meaning of life thanks to the information you have in your dreams. All dreams contain precious information that helps you find sound mental health and peace because they are produced by God.

God and Satan are not mythological creatures. God is your doctor, and Satan is your tyrannous.

Your satanic anti-conscience belongs to you, but it works independently of your conscience, and it has a self-destructive nature. Whenever you listened to the absurd thoughts sent by your anti-conscience, you are misled by Satan, while you believe that you are doing what 'you' want because your anti-conscience pretends to be you.

If you made a series of mistakes in your life because you were influenced by your anti-conscience, you are depressed because your actions ruined your personality and your life, since they did not result from conscious decisions.

If you judge the world based on the false logic of your anti-conscience, you are constantly dissatisfied and angry. You can not find peace, and you can not find motivation.

If your parents were mentally ill and they made many mistakes, you have inherited their absurdity and you are a victim of their irresponsibility.

If you had traumatic experiences during your childhood and adolescence, your depression is one of the numerous terrible consequences of your sad life biography.

You have to translate the meaning of your dreams to verify what exactly is affecting your mental health, and what you can do to change this situation.

Your dreams reflect what is happening in your brain, and how the outside world influences your behavior and your life. You have a clear image of your psychological system and your reality.

Strength of Faith in the Midst of Depression

THOSE in the grips of the black dog, depression, would hardly agree, but from safe perspective, to step forward into a day when we're depressed is to show great faith.

The harder the climb to the precipice the more accomplished we feel having ascended the peak. Much is the same when we've had the most horrendous day and we slump into bed in victory!

Depression may rule our conscious moment, but it's faith that signifies our journey.

Any mentally healthy person with a semblance of compassion, who looks upon a person located with depression, who shows up on life's doorstep each day, to have a go; that one sees a hero.

Against all the odds, the person immersed in depression overcomes every obstacle by sheer faith. They must. They have no possession of hope. No anchor is their, and those lumpy seas are awash in a perfect storm, and those depths are unfathomable. But such is their faith! And even if they give up, they must inevitably keep breathing and moving and trying.

The will to survive, in and of itself, involves such great faith.

The one sensible in their faith sees the one who has no grip of sense, and they see spiritual toughness that's the envy of those who take their faith for granted.

So, great is your faith if you get up any morning swathed in dread, and yet get to work on the work of your life, though small a task it is. And even if you can not, you inspire those who, with compassion, see the inroads you're making in the living of life.

Depression is common illness and is serious: One in 10 adults report experiencing depression at some time in their life. This is not just feeling down for a day or two or sad because you have gone through a breakup. Clinical depression can affect you in many ways. Below is a checklist for you to see if you might be depressed.

Signs and Symptoms

Depression's symptoms vary greatly from person to person and may even change during depression. Common symptoms (though not all) of depression include:

Frequent crying and overwhelming feelings of sadness.

Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.

Changes in sleep such as excessive sleeping or the inability to sleep.


Anger or Irritability.

Difficulty enjoying previously-enjoyed activities.

Unexplained physical ailments such as headaches or muscle pain.

Brain chemistry plays a major role and life experiences can also affect brain chemistry. Some people become depressed after experiencing a trauma or stressful life change such as the death of a spouse, a separation or divorce, financial instability, moving, giving birth, or health issues. Everyday stressors can also contribute to depression. Sometimes depression arises as a defense mechanism in order to avoid experiencing painful emotions.

Depression's symptoms are different from the symptoms related to grief, when feeling emotionally overwhelmed is normal and short term. Depression may be suggested when feelings of despair and sadness upset daily life and last for more than two weeks.

A person experiencing depression may have difficulty coping with daily stressors and may feel helpless and alone. In fact, sometimes the most everyday activities-getting out of bed, bathing, and dressing-can feel like a difficult achievement.

Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy, and the condition is highly treatable. Unfortunately, stigma surrounding depression prevails many people from seeking treatment. Because an individual with depression may see themselves as flawed or weak, they are likely to feel shame about their condition and wish that they could “just snap out of it.” Depression is hard to overcome by yourself and you just can not think positive and get over it.

There are a number of therapeutic approaches that are effective in treating depression, including mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and psychodynamic therapy. Some do well with therapy alone and others find that they might need medication, but the choice is always up to you. Regardless of the approach, a trained therapist can help a person heal the source of the depression. By getting to the root of the cause, examining thinking patterns, very accepting new options, looking for strengths and coping with emotions, depression can lift and individuals can resume their lives.

Why It’s Good to Be Real About Your Depression

ONE of the most encouraging things any of us can do for another person is to tell the truth about how we feel.

We love it when we can be our real selves, especially regarding the struggles we have. And this applies much more so to the Christian than it does to everyone else, because there is this double-rolled truth:

Although Christians are commanded and empowered to tell the truth, they're also more likely to hide their truth, for shame and guilt that perhaps their faith does not work.

We know that depression and other mental illnesses do not discriminate, and that they're incredibly complex. Having depression does not whatsoever correlation with weak faith.

In fact, it takes stupendously greater faith to keep stepping with the Lord through the dark nights of the soul. And it's this faith, if only others knew what we were dealing with, that would inspire others.

It's good to be real about our depression because an unnecessary burden is immediately relieved; we no longer have to carry the arduous weight of a lie!

When we live openly in the light of the truth – that life is hard, every and every day, or most days – then we stand to be encouraged by others for the courage we've shown. This equips others to employ their courage.

Being honest about where our mental health is helps to inspire others to be honest. And when two people can be honest with each other, they give each other permission to be real, and there is no greater gift or blessing.

Perhaps the purpose of your depression is to be real about it, by trusting God; He may have a purpose in it for you. It might help others to their freedom.

Now, I can tell you I've been depressed several times, and I doubt whether I've had my final bout. Is not that encouraging? You and I are not alone.

Suicide, Major Depression Disorder, and Bipolar Disease

Suicide is more likely to occur during a major depression episode and more likely to occur in bipolar depression which is harder to treat medically. The rates of suicide are consistently increasing in all age groups.

CDC statistics for the United States show that in 2014 there were over 42,000 suicides. Suicide is thus the tenth leading cause of death in Americans. Consider that a suicide occurs every thirteen minutes in the US

Suicides by country as of 2011 compiled by the WHO listed by number per 100,000 population reveal some surprising results. These numbers are underestimates as some countries with strong social and religious objection to suicide are under reported or not at all.

Guyana had the highest rate by far at 44

The next four highest rates at 28 were South Korea, Sri Lanka, Lithuania, Surinam, and Mozambique.

Countries with rates in the 24 range include Tanzania, Nepal, Kazakhstan and Burundi. In the 20 range were India, South Sudan, Turkmenistanisan, Russia, Uganda, Hungary, and Japan.

In the 16-19 range were Sudan, Comoros, Ukraine, Poland, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Latvia, Kenya, Malawi and Zambia.

Countries in the 14 to 15 range were northern European and Scandinavian countries: Finland, Belgium, Iceland and Estonia.

The US is in the 11 to 13 range along with France, Chile, Bolivia, Croatia, Austria, Ethiopia, Thailand, Cuba, Sweden, and Ireland.

The largest category was in the 9 to 10 range and among others including Romania, Argentina, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and Luxembourg.

Some of those listed in the 6-8 range include China, Singapore, Fiji, Costa Rica, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Paraguay,

As for rates of 5 are Honduras, Colombia, Morocco, Iran, Spain, and Viet Nam.

Those in the 3- 4 range include Panama, Italy Guinea, Qatar, Liberia, Indonesia, Mexico, Greece, Yemen, Peru, United Ara Emirates and South Africa.

The lowest rates in the 1-2 range were Barbados, Bahamas, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon.

The lowest rates of less than 1 / 100,000 were Oman, Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

I can see no pattern as far as developed versus underdeveloped countries or by socio-economic levels. Some of the surprising countries are those with a strong religious condemnation of suicide.

The latest statistics which are in a class of their own is that for returning Middle East veterans. Approximately 22 of these service men die by suicide each day. Returning veterans are afflicted by brain trauma, PTSD, amputations, etc. One in every six returning veterans have or develop drug or alcohol addiction which can lead to homelessness. There are now more than 700,000 vets in the court system for various offsets.

The following statistics were as of 2014 and do not take into consideration sex in which across the board the rate is 4 to 1, male to female.

Ages 13-19: 4

Ages 20-34: 15

The largest increase in suicides has been in the group 45 or older at 19 per 100,000.

WHO statistics from 1999-2010 reveal the most pronounced increase occurred among men in their 50s in which the rate increased by 50% to 30 per 100,000. For women the largest increase was seen for ages 60 to 64, an increase of 60% to 7 per 100,00.

These increases in suicide rates occurred, therefore, among baby-boomers where issues of life choices and economic downturn and financial stress may have played a role. Middle-aged baby boomers are having to provide for their aging parents as well as for their own family. Also, the wide availability of prescription opoid drugs may play a role. Studies at Rutgers University suggest the rise in this age group has been due to unrealized expectations upon retirement.

Other demographics near age are at play. The largest group committing suicide are Caucasians followed by American Indians and Eskimo Indians. As of 2014 whites accounted for 70% of suicides. The use of firearms is still the most common method.

Over 90% of people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of death. Untreated depression or bipolar depression are the most likely causes of suicide. Among individuals affected with adverse conditions the rate of suicide over a lifetime is 15% or 1 in 8. Other causes surrounding mental illness include a history of sexual or physical abuse, drug or alcohol abuse, poor job security, victims of bullying and social isolation and situational depression.

As for suicide attempts over 500,000 are reported by hospitals in 2014 a figure that is vastly under estimated. A study of suicide survivors have shown that after five years these folks uniformly are glad they did not succeed.
