In today's day-to-day lifestyle, depression is a very familiar disorder. It affects every eighth man and every fourth woman (scary I know). Many of us are actually unaware of the symptoms of depression which include feelings of desperation, compulsive negative thinking, increased or decreased appetite, insomnia or an increased need for sleep, being apart from the social scene, frequently irritated, loss of memory and lowered concentration levels, interest in suicide and death. Never take the causes of depression too lightly, It may get worse if not cured on time and It should be under periodic surveillance.

It's assumed that the cause of depression is 40 – 70% hereditary, and it is also noted that in some cases the person under depression has a child who is showing signs of depression as well (as was the case in my relationship with my father) . This means that the potential for depression lies in the persons genetic organisms.

Hereditary or not it's proven that depression is nothing but an angry or hopeless mood and can be overcome in time. It is known that being deprived of light and warmth in the winter season can increase the chances of depression. This type of seasonal disorder can further lead to a major depressive condition. Hormones also plays a major role in causing depression, especially among those women who sufferers from Pre menstrual syndrome or postpartum depression. In fact, while one out of every four women suffer from depression compared to one in every eight men, this discrepancy disappears among women who have undergone menopause, when there are lower levels of estrogen. More and more research is needed to rectify either these hormonal disorders can really cause depression or are merely just triggers.

Getting thrown out of a job, getting divorced, or a sudden death in the family may not be the true cause of depression, but they can tamper the problem in those who have predispositions for the problem. Most probably these events can cause feelings of worthlessness, but if these are not persistent, they are the normal aspects of the grieving process and are not the real cause of the depression.

Depression is sadness that lasts too long. Everyone is sad at some point in their lives but depression is more than that. It is a feeling that you can not bring yourself up from the bottom. Once you have acknowledged that you have depression, remember that it is a medical condition and can be cured. Nobody actually thinks of you the way you think they do. Talk to someone. Suicide – A 95 Percent Chance

“Patty is gone”, was what I heard when my sister Maureen called me on December 3, 2012. One year ago. My first thought was that Patty had left the care home and was heading back home. No, Patty had taken her life that morning. I did not have the opportunity to say goodbye. This was something that our family and her doctor had given a zero to 5 percent chance of happening. Suicide had been discussed with Patty and she had given her “guarantee” that suicide was not an option.

Her wonderful psychiatrist believed that Patty's strong, lifelong Catholic faith would always deter her from suicide. I held her hand at Mass the day before. Little did we know that she would be gone the next day. So, after 67 years, we live on with the great memories while wrestling with the mystery of suicide. There will not be any new memories. Lives have changed.

During this past year, in retrospect, I have come to the realization that instead of prescribing a 5 percent chance that Patty would have committed suicide, it should have been a 95 percent chance. Obviously, this is very easy for me to say one year later. However, this is not about me or Patty's family. It is about the millions of families that deal with mental illness on a daily basis. They must talk about suicide with each other constantly. They must be direct, open and honest in communications.

Patty was feeling trapped and believed that there was no way out. She wanted her unbearable pain to end. 90 percent of people who die by suicide in the US suffer debilitating mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The reasons people choose suicide are multilayered and there is no easy explanation.

What was she thinking? How long had she planned the action? Did she have a plan? Why did she do it at that time? These are some of the questions that we now ask. One of our father's favorite words was fakery, although I am not certain it is a real word. The definition of fakery is the inclination or practice of misleading others through lies or trickery. How long did her fakery go on? Everything makes sense when you are suicidal.

Could we have pretended her suicide? This is the question that will be with our family forever with no answer. I find some solace in believing that she was determined to commit suicide. I may be deceiving myself, but I need to find some positives in this tragic story.

Should we have been trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide? Yes. Patty had a special relationship with her doctor. She saw him often and he had guided her successfully through her previous bouts of depression. This time was different. Four months of pacing, non-eating and total withdrawal had consumed her. We discovered that drugs are not always the answer to make people better. Patty took enough drugs to stock a pharmacy. There is no magic cure for depression.

What was her Catholic belief system telling her? We were originally taught as children that suicide was a mortal sin. Patty knew that suicide allowed her to be inside God's embrace, enjoying a freedom she thought she could never enjoy here again. She knew, through her work with the homeless, that God has a special affection for those who are too bruised to survive in this world.

Americans are not prepared to talk about mental illness or suicide, because of the stigma. It leaves us with emotional, moral and religious scars. Suicide brings with it an ache, a chaos, and a darkness. There is no reason to feel shame or shame. 45.6 million American adults are living with mental illness.

How can someone really recognize the signs that a loved one may be contemplating suicide? Nobody can predict a suicide. You must be prepared to help someone you love who one day may experience a suicidal crisis. Take all talk of suicide seriously. Constantly ask the direct questions, “Are you thinking about suicide?” or “Are you having suicidal thoughts?” Do not treat the threat lightly – even if the loved one jokes about it. They are expressions of extreme distress.

Get your loved one help immediately by taking them to the hospital emergency room, calling 911 or the police department, call a suicide hotline or call their doctor. Do not leave the person alone. Make sure that they have no access to means of harm that could have been used in a suicide attempt. This includes cords of all sorts.

With a shortage of psychiatric beds, patients must have considered a danger to themselves or others for inpatient admission. Patients must communicate their dangerousness or distress in order to guarantee that they will be admitted for further treatment.

The idea of ​​certainty in our life is an illusion which is in place so we can function in everyday life. But nothing is certain. Suicide throws out this notification of certainty and forces us to realize that life is a gift. Remember the 95 percent rule!

Again, people present with depression differently although some of the most common symptoms are sadness, lack of motivation, feeling overwhelmed, lack of interest in anything, feeling useless and being stuck in a downward spiral.

How to Beat Winter Blues With Exercise

Whenever it snows my skier friends get all excited. But some people, like me, just get the winter weather blues. We all know exercise helps beat depression, but having to dig your car out in a blizzard is sure a handy excuse to ignore the gym, and curl up on the couch instead.

Sometimes winter depression is brought on by fewer hours of daylight. But winter blues can also result from feeling worn out by the repeated assaults of ice, snow, and bitter cold. Add the anxiety of hazardous driving conditions, and it is easy to feel undone by Mother Nature's wrath.

Winter blues may mean you need a change in attitude.

I used to spend Christmas with friends who lived out in the country in upstate New York. There would be a well over a foot of snow outside, but after dinner my irrepressible hostess would announce, “let's all go cross country skiing!” In the cold. In the dark. But it was fun because she loved it so, and none of us could help but share in her enthusiasm.

Because of my friend, I know that our attitudes about winter can be changed, and the more we make it fun, the less stressful it will be. It's not as easy if you do not have a snow loving buddy, but braving the elements can actually make you feel better. You get fresh air, sunlight, and a double shot of aerobic exercise just trying to make it to the curve. Plus winning over the elements can boost your confidence about what you achieve if you want to.

To get the most of winter exercise, keep these tips in mind:

Find cold weather clothes that make you happy. For me, silk long johns and cashmere socks make winter almost welcome. Splurge on brightly hats or gloves, water resistant outerwear and snuggly boots that are just plain fun to wear.

Be sensible about weather changes , and aware when the temperature becomes dangerously low. Frostbite weather is not the time to be brave. If the pros say to stay inside, take their advice, and do some yoga instead.

Get walking with traction grips. If walking is your exercise of choice, slippery roads and sidewalks can make you feel trapped inside. But you can beat winter walking blues with traction grips. These are inexpensive, stretchy, wire loop grippy things that you slip over the soles of your shoes or boots, which cut into ice enough to let you walk more securely. Different brands can be found at outdoor outfitters and sporting goods stores, as well as online, and can make walking in winter safer and more enjoyable.

Step up to snow shoeing. Once thought of only for arctic explorers and people who use dog-sleds as regular transportation, snow shoes can turn your entire yard into an aerobic workout path. One of the hassles of walking in deep snow is what an effort it is to get anywhere, an effort that can make you feel defeated before you start. Snow shoes let you skim across the top of the snow, are less expensive than skis, and give you a fun activity you can share with your family.

Cross country skiing: a total body workout that gets you places. If you live in the flatlands, or have no desire to ski downhill, cross country skiing could be for you. It's a terrific total body workout, warming you up all over, getting your heart pumping and helping blues busting oxygen flow to your brain. It is hard to feel depressed when you are invigorated and sailing along in the sunshine, and if you've ever seen news stories of people skiing down the streets where no cars can pass, you need never have cabin fever again.

Shovel your neighbor's sidewalk. What a great way to lend a hand to someone who may need help, and beat depression at the same time. We can pay a gym for weights to lift, but nature provides plenty of lifting to do, which can give us the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile. Be sure you heart is healthy before you do too much heavy shoveling, and use a bent handle shovel to protect your back.

Keep some exercise videos at hand. If you have any floor space at all, there will be an exercise video that fits it. Yoga, tai chi, hand weights or stretchy cords, the options are endless. If people live under you, or your walls shake, floor routines can still get your blood pumping and warm you up on cold days. Some workouts are even available for online streaming, so it does not matter what you do, just do something. Your body and your mood will thank you.

I'll never be a fan of winter, but I do know that giving it get me down gets me nowhere. Not every cold day may be a fun one, but the more we beat winter blues with exercise, the stronger we will be to beat the bad weather when we need to.

How to Beat Depression When You Are Alone

When you think about being alone, do you imagine calm serenity, or the panic of being stranded on a dark and isolated road? If you are trying to beat depression when you are alone, how you experience depression will be different if you believe you can draw strength from solitude, or if you feel fearful, abandoned, and lost.

Solitude vs. loneliness.

Many years ago, Georges Moustaki sang lovely lyrics that translate as “no, I am never alone … with my solitude.” Most introverts know this feeling well. And even gregarious people can long for solitude if they feel overwhelmed by the weight of other people's demands. When you are on the verge of collapse, even depression can be enticing … like a wonderful escape into nothingness, where the world is forced to leave you alone.

All of us need some quiet time. Time to reflect, meditate, or put green mud on our faces with some privacy. It is not always easy to learn how to ask for solitude, but it is a skill we must develop in order to recharge our inner resources. Building in regular moments of peaceful solitude amidst the stress of life can protect you from an all out dive over the cliff into the depression void.

Unlike solitude, loneliness hurts. The loss of a spouse or parent, or the end of any significant relationship where we felt part of a team, can hit us as a sudden shock, or grow from a long goodbye. Even a job move to another part of the country can leave us cut off from our support network and emotional resources, leaving us feeling adrift, scared, and even unloved. Depression attaches itself to grief and loneliness like a magnet. We feel that nothing matters because we no longer seem to matter to anyone else.

Learn the joy of solitude to ease the anxiety of loneliness.

Even in the midst of depression, solitude can bring us comfort if we let it. Being alone gives us full license to be good to ourselves, without others we have to please. If our psyches need a few days in bed, then it may be exactly the reprieve we need to get back on our feet.

Meditation, music, laughter, exercise, and good food are all things we can do alone, just for ourselves. We can watch zany movies or lose ourselves in a monster sized novel, and sniffle and sob to our heart's content. To paraphrase author Chris Cade, one good book is worth more than a host of bad companions.

Give thanks for real friends and family who have blessed your life in the past. Even if they are no longer with you, the time you spent together was a gift you can still cherish. And if you had wonderful people who cared for you before, know that other people will enter your life again.

Group support or therapy can also do a lot if you need to talk out the loss of a loved one, or feelings of abandonment. Check your local paper for meeting times in your area.

Avoid isolation by giving of yourself.

While a little solitude is good for you, the time comes to go back into the world. If we fight depression alone for too long, we may isolate ourselves from the very people that could help us back up. We may tell ourselves we have nothing to contribute, or that we will not be missed.

Do not believe what your depression is telling you. There are plenty of people who could use your help, and helping others is a very effective therapy for helping yourself. Volunteer organizations always need extra hands, whether to serve meals, build houses, care for abandoned animals, or a myriad of other causes. You can feel refreshed by doing good, and the people you volunteer with may become a new source of friendship and care.

If you cherish yourself when you are alone, you will have more courage to step out and interact with others. Before long more people will share your life, your sense of purpose will be renewed, and you can beat depression wherever you are alone or not.

Post Natal Depression – What Are the Baby Bluez?

In 2010 I was diagnosed with postnatal depression after the birth of my second child. My first pregnancy had been reliably easy, with help at hand with my mother a short distance away. At the same time, my first-born was a gem – no sleepless nights, no breastfeeding woes – a happy, contented child. So when my Elizabeth came, it was catastrophic – and now my mum was hundreds of miles away.

Naturally worrying about the progress of any pregnancy is inevitable with most mothers, no matter how many children they have had. My first pregnancy went along without any real problems. However, after the second pregnancy, and with a more difficult child, my anxiety got to the point of excessive worrying, and an inability to relax.

Even after 3 weeks my daughter would not settle into any routine for her feeding and sleeping. She slept most of the day and killed most of the night. I could not control her screaming even though my doctor and maternal child health nurse found no health problems. Everything became an effort. I just could not accept. I was sleep-deprived, appetite-disturbed and exhausted. I felt I was the worst mother in the world.

The decisive and well balanced person of the past had disappeared and in her place was a teary, panicky woman who was a shadow of her former self. In other words, there was something majorly very wrong. Even today I still can not believe that my darling husband persevered with me.

Society makes it difficult for most women to acknowledge that there is something wrong. Is not childbirth the time when most women feel joy and bliss? Is not post natal depression portrayed as negative? Look at how well all the celebrities manage with all their children? And look at me, I felt alone and unable to cope, life was not perfect.

When help finally came, my life changed and my feelings and responses towards my daughter changed. My doctor finally admitted me to hospital where diagnosis of postnatal depression was made and medication begun. He prescribed an antidepressant which corrected the chemical imbalance in the brain which may have been responsible for my depression.

What Causes Postpartum Depression

While there is no known cause for PPD, it is because that it may be triggered by fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone levels that occurs following childbirth. Abnormalities in the thyroid hormones have also been listed.

My daughter is now a beautiful 5-year old and I love her to bits and enjoy every minute with her. I thank my family for listening and emotionally supporting me. I have learned to trust my parenting skills and I am no longer embarrassed to admit that I have suffered postnatal depression.

Postnatal Depression Signs and Symptoms

In fact over 20% of pregnant women experience some sort of depression. Symptoms can occur anytime during pregnancy, however, studies indicate that it is more common after birth. Studies also show that if the sufferer has depression symptoms prior to pregnancy, the symptoms are often more serious after the pregnancy.

While most mothers experience: mood swings, insomnia, dependency, crying, restlessness, irritability, and feelings of sadness for a week or two after childbirth, if symptoms last longer, then the diagnosis of postnatal depression is made.

Typically, the primary risk factor is having a family history of depression, although life events such as marital problems, child abuse, unemployment, low education or low socioeconomic status play a part.

It is important to know that postnatal depression is not a sign of personal weakness, failure, or 'all in the mind'. I encourage any other mother who may be going through these same feelings to seek professional help as early as possible. It will help you, your child and your family. The good news is that you will recover. Learn to ask for help. It is never too late. And yes, I am a good mum!

When we're depressed, all of life looks tasteless and empty of joy. If we learn how to eat to beat depression though, we can restart more than just our taste buds. The reason is the how, and not just the what. To beat depression, learning to eat mindfully is as important as the foods we choose.

Depressed people often fall into one of two camps … those who lose all interest in food, or those who shovel it in trying to soothe the pain. Too little food leaves us weak and light headed; too much leaves us feeling guilty and bloated. Either way we seldom taste the food, because we had so little interest to start with, or because the hand to mouth was working while our minds were somewhere else.

What is mindful eating, and how can it help beat depression?

Eating mindfully simply means giving all your attention to every bite of food you take. How it looks, how it tastes, how it feels in your mouth and all the way down into your tummy. And if you choose healthy foods, like berries or nuts, with lots of color, flavor and texture, and really focus on the experience of eating, then you poke a little hole in the fog of constantly thinking about being depressed.

Think of a strawberry, for example. You have to hold on to the stem for a second before you can pop it in your mouth. Notice the color is richer at the end, and maybe a little whitish at the top. When you nibble at the pointy end, you can not help but feel those little seeds on your tongue, at the same time you taste the sweetness and feel just a little crunch. And it tastes so good. Get the picture?

Benefits of mindful eating include:

1. Enhanced pleasure from the experience of food. If that sounds hedonistic, remember we are talking about how to eat to beat depression here. You are starting from zero pleasure in anything … so it is good to find some where you can, to break the grayness that consumes you.

2. It can pique your appetite, but keep you from mindlessly stuffing yourself. Mindful eating is good whether you are eating too little or too much. Remember the old Lay's Potato Chips® ads that said, “bet you can not eat just one”? Well if food holds no interest, sipping a little tomato or grape juice, or munching some green olives or chocolate, could entice your taste buds to want more. You probably have some “can not eat just one” favorites of your own.

If you tend to devour more food than you notice, then paying closer attention to each bite will help keep you from swallowing tasteless mouthfuls because you did not even realize they were there.

3. It can head off depression caused by being overweight. Many women experience depression because they feel fat, and the depression holds them back from making positive lifestyle changes that would encourage weight loss. So then, feeling terribly discouraged, they escape into more mindless eating.

Studies have shown that focused eating can help people slow down and eat less, without the stress of diet plans, and the accomplices fears of failure. By savoring each bite you taste, you may find you are satisfied with less, and you can avoid eating purely as a reflex action.

4. Mindful eating encourages better choices. When you do not really care what it is that you are eating, you can find yourself with orange fingers from cheese puffs you had for dinner on the couch. When you decide to eat mindfully, on the other hand, you feel more empowered to find things that taste good and are good for you.

Depression may make us feel numb, but our brains are still busy. They're just busy maintaining the unhappy status quo.

Alternate mindful eating and other positive activities for best results.

We have discussed before about the benefits of laughter and music to lift your spirits. If you have some favorite books that help when you are depressed, Psychology Today suggests reading a bit, stopping to eat a few mindful bites, and then returning to your book. In the same way, you could sip some tea while watching a funny movie or listening to music, but save your moments of eating to a non-distracted time.

Healthy, tasty food, eaten mindfully is a boost to our bodies, our minds, and our total well being. And taking time to notice and appreciate every bite is how we can eat to beat depression.

I am a true believer of the saying: “Everything that happens, happens for a reason.” That is, something good comes out of every bad situation. If you feel that you need to simply talk about your problems, then seek help through a therapist. One thing to consider when seeking a therapist is the connection that you will have with the therapist. You want to find a therapist who will be caring and considerate. Ask your primary doctor for a referral. Look around in your local area for community mental health clinics for support; the cost could be much cheaper.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on maladaptive patterns of thought processes. It aims to help people know why they think they way they do. For example, a depressed person may think that he or she is worthless and insignificant, but with this therapy, the individual will be encouraged to treat such thinking as a hypotheses, not as facts and to test their hypotheses through experiences to prove how right they think they are. Patients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will be keeping a log of their thoughts processes in order for them to determine maladaptive thinking patterns and turn them into positive thought patterns. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is problem focused and goal-oriented (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, nd).

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic Therapy focuses on clients' self-awareness. It encourages clients to understand the influence that their past has on their current behaviors. This approach enables clients to observe any unresolved conflicts that may still exist from past dysfunctional events (Haggerty, nd). This therapy is effective as it helps depressed clients gain insight about themselves by understating how different behaviors in their life has occurred (Stagno, 2008).

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal therapy focuses on the individual's personal relationships. The goal of interpersonal therapy is to improve the depressed person's communication pattern and help improve how he or she relates to others. A few techniques used during the interpersonal therapy are helping clients identify their emotions and their causes, helping clients express their emotions, and helping clients deal with their emotions (Herkov, nd).

Treatment Through Medication

Even though depression medications are the most advertised treatment, that does not mean that it is the most effective treatment. Because depression is not just due to a chemical imbalance in the brain, medications may help alleviate some symptoms, but it will not completely cure the problem as it is only a short-term solution. Depression medications come with side effects and once taken off the medications, withdrawal can be tough. If you decide to treat depression through medications, make sure to learn about the facts of the prescription. Also, remember that there are other treatments such as lifestyle changes and / or therapy that can be a better choice of treatment than therapies.
